From power plant to your socket

GenerationPlants burn gas, use river water, or run on steam. Each produces electricity at roughly 11,000 to 16,000 volts.
Step-upTransformers at the plant raise the voltage so power can travel far without losing much to heat.
330 kV backboneThe long, thick lines linking regions: Lagos to Benin to Onitsha, and the Niger dams to Kaduna and Kano.
132 kV networkRegional lines that branch off the backbone toward towns and industrial areas.
Distribution companyAt a transmission station, 132 kV is stepped down to 33 kV and handed to a DisCo, which takes it to 11 kV and then to homes and businesses.

Terms on this map

TCN: The Transmission Company of Nigeria owns and runs the high-voltage grid.
Genco: A generation company created from the former national power utility. FGN means Federal Government of Nigeria.
IPP: An independent power producer. “A” marks plants operating, “B” marks plants planned.
NIPP: Plants built under the National Integrated Power Project, mostly gas-fired in the south.
Single and double circuit: A double-circuit line carries two sets of conductors on the same towers, so it moves more power and keeps working if one circuit trips. On the map, thicker lines carry two or more circuits.
Ongoing: Lines and stations that were under construction or planned when TCN drew its map. They appear dashed or as rings.
Tee: A small open dot where one line branches off another between stations.
DisCo: A distribution company. Each serves a group of states and bills the customers.
